I STUMBLED upon the Heritage Trust website while browsing through Helensburgh history.

canada_flagOne picture in the Photo Gallery in particular caught my attention — the picture of the Helensburgh Scottish Country Dance Group, taken in 1951 at the Queens Hotel.

The gentleman sitting front and centre next to Cathie Ramsay is my father, William Hunter. He was the president of the branch at that time, and passed away in 1995 at the age of 83. My mother was also a member of the society but is not in the picture, and I believe only the Executive are in the picture.

We lived in Helensburgh from 1947 until 1956, when we moved to Canada. My father was the manager of James Simpson Ltd. on West Princes Street, which had workshops on George Street. That shop is now Stewarts of Helensburgh.

I attended Clyde Street School from 1948 until 1954, and have many fond memories of my childhood in Helensburgh. Both of my sisters — Doreen Hunter Thom, who passed away in 2006, and Eleanor Hunter Lowe — attended Hermitage Primary and Secondary Schools in those years, but somehow I was sent to Clyde Street School.

Best regards,

Alex Hunter
