baird_house_bexhill.jpgPROPERTY developer Laing Homes transformed the one-time Bexhill-on-Sea home of Helensburgh-born television inventor John Logie Baird into their new Egerton Place apartments in 2009.

The leading housebuilder, which is part of the Taylor Wimpey group, claims that the development is a fitting tribute to his legacy.

Marie-Claire Travis, regional sales and marketing director for Laing Homes, says: “Baird lived in Bexhill during the 1940s in a late Victorian villa built in the Vernacular Revival style — a quirky building which wasn’t exactly celebrated for its architectural merits.

Architect Rebecca Peters designed two delightful apartment buildings to replace the old properties on the site, and in doing so breathed new life into the street scene at this superb location on the corner of Upper Sea Road and Station Road.

While drawing on some of the better architectural features of Baird’s former home, the new apartments boast a more traditional, Victorian frontage which adds to the splendour of the South Coast seaside town.

Named the ‘Baird Court’ apartments, and the ‘Helensburgh’ apartments, the new homes at Egerton Place have sold fast and now just one stylish two-bedroom apartment remains for sale, priced at £164,955.

The two-bedroom, two-bathroom ‘Helensburgh’ apartment has a spacious living/dining room, while a well-proportioned contemporary kitchen which includes an integrated oven, hob and hood can be found off the entrance hallway, and in addition to the main bathroom, the master bedroom benefits from an en-suite shower room.

Bexhill-on-Sea retains the charm of an unspoilt Victorian seaside resort, boasting award-winning sandy beaches, a wide promenade and the recently refurbished 1930s De La Warr pavilion.
