THE football manager who led Scotland to victory over newly-crowned world champions England in 1967 has lived in Helensburgh for nearly 50 years.
Bobby Brown — a very successful player himself — became a national hero when his team beat Sir Alf Ramsay's men at Wembley 3-2 in their first match after winning the Jules Rimet Trophy the previous year.

A HELENSBURGH boy who emigrated to Australia at the age of just eleven went on to become one of the pioneers of early professional photography.
Despite being orphaned soon after arriving Down Under, burgh-born Thomas Mathewson (right) started a family dynasty in the photographic business.

THE BBC showed two programmes in early November 2009 about Helensburgh TV inventor John Logie Baird, one old and one new.
The new programme was part of the series entitled "The Scots who made the modern world" and a short section of the programme was devoted to John Logie Baird.

A 1937 television set and drinks cabinet made by Helensburgh TV inventor John Logie Baird's Baird Television Company fetched £18,000 at Bonhams auction house in Knightsbridge, London, on September 30 2009.
Lot 682, it was one of 24 old TV sets in the Michael Bennett-Levy QC Early Technology Sale, and was expected to fetch the highest price of at least £3,000.

PROPERTY developer Laing Homes transformed the one-time Bexhill-on-Sea home of Helensburgh-born television inventor John Logie Baird into their new Egerton Place apartments in 2009.
The leading housebuilder, which is part of the Taylor Wimpey group, claims that the development is a fitting tribute to his legacy.

HELENSBURGH and District’s Girl Guides marked the organisation’s centenary on Wednesday October 20 2010.
Princess Louise opened the first local Guide unit at Rosneath, and the Helensburgh guide HQ in John Street was opened in 1925 by Lady Baden Powell.

A HELENSBURGH man who was a captain of Scottish industry will also forever be associated with a charity which helps terminally ill cancer patients.
Douglas Hume, C.B.E., LL.D, was the last of four generations of his family to run the internationally-renowned Glasgow-based engineering firm James Howden & Co. Ltd., where he was managing director from 1964 to 1987 and chairman in 1988.
