A FORMER pupil of Helensburgh’s Lomond School opened her fifth solo art exhibition at the Portland Gallery in London’s Mayfair on Thursday November 11 2010.

Kirsty Wither, who was a boarder at the burgh school while her Army officer father and his wife, a potter, moved from posting to posting, is now a very successful artist with work varying from flowers to nudes to landscapes.

She lives with her husband, actor Robin Cameron, in Brighton but spends a lot of time at her parents house at Innellan, enjoying walking holidays on the west coast.

The 42 year-old artist graduated from Gray’s College in Aberdeen 20 years ago after four years of study, and started by putting on exhibitions in hotel foyers. Her first full exhibition came five years later at Anne Mendelow’s Gatehouse Gallery in Glasgow.

Since then she has exhibited in solo and other exhibitions all over the UK, and there are five corporate collections of her work, including one at Edinburgh’s Royal College of Surgeons. She was elected an Artist Member of the Chelsea Arts Club in 2004.

She said of her work: “My paintings are as much about the actual paint on the surface as about the subject matter.  Working with oil paint, I build up layers of colour and texture to create an image that will hopefully have some resonance with the viewer.

“Being in the studio is a mysterious place where the paint takes over from any set ideas I start with and often unexpectedly leads me to a finished work."

The Mayfair exhibition continued until Friday November 26, and she will also have an exhibition at the Mansfield Park Gallery in Glasgow in May 2011 which will feature landscapes inspired by a recent visit to George Orwell’s cottage on Jura.
