Burgh writer's legacy

brian_d.osborneA BOOKCASE of works by a former librarian from Helensburgh was gifted to Dumbarton recently in his memory.

Author and traveller Brian D.Osborne, who grew up in the burgh at the family home in West Princes Street and regularly returned from his Kirkintilloch home, often to give talks, died suddenly on May 30 2008 while on holiday in Uzbekistan.

His legacy lives on in the collection which was unveiled at Dumbarton Library by his dad, Malcolm.

Brian, 67, spent more than 20 years with the local library service as depute district librarian, and later was chief officer of libraries and museums for East Dunbartonshire from 1989-95, based in Kirkintilloch.

He wrote, edited and researched many articles and plays, and the donated collection consists of some 60 books, 160 articles and talks, from 1980 onwards, plus fiction, plays and two-man shows.

There are also box-files filled with research material that Brian, who was also secretary of the Neil Munro Society, had gathered and was, in some cases, still working on.

The hope is that other lovers of books will be inspired by his writing to go on and do research of their own — or complete some of his unfinished work. Many of Brian’s former colleagues and friends attended a reception to mark the unveiling.
