travelling-gallerySCOTLAND'S mobile art gallery visited Helensburgh on Tuesday September 2 2008 as part of its 30th birthday celebrations.

The Travelling Gallery was on an autumn tour, and showcased a new exhibition which explored people's relationship with the sea and coastline – just like the very first artwork exhibited on the bus in 1978. Admission was free.

Argyll and Bute Council's spokesman for arts and culture, Councillor Douglas Philand, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity for people to climb on board the bus to see the gallery’s latest exhibition, entitled On Edge.

“It featured exhibits by a varied group of seven contemporary artists whose artwork explores issues relating to the sea.”

The gallery’s visit was part of a 15-week tour to schools and communities throughout Scotland. The artists exhibiting were T.S.Beall, Thomas Joshua Cooper, Matthew Dalziel and Louise Scullion, Celine Duval, Michael Mersinis and Charlotte Watters.

The Travelling Gallery service was introduced in 1978 by the Scottish Arts Council. In 1997 its operation was switched to the City of Edinburgh Council, which continues to operate a national service.
