New session — new venue

Ewan-Kennedy-wHELENSBURGH Heritage Trust moved to a new venue for the first open meeting of the winter session on Wednesday September 28.

It was held in the marriage room of the Helensburgh and Lomond Civic Centre (originally Clyde Street School) — a change of venue from Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club.

Treasurer Stewart Noble said: "It gave members and guests a chance to see what a good job Argyll and Bute Council have made of restoring the old building."

The venue also has the advantage of being on the ground floor, with plenty of parking spaces outside the building. Three display cases of local artefacts supplied by the Trust can be seen close to the Marriage Room.

The speaker was Glasgow gallery owner Ewan Kennedy (pictured), and his subject "The Leiper Legacy". This year is the centenary of the death of William Leiper, a successful local architect, and many of the most prominent buildings in the town are his work.

There was also the opportunity to buy a copy of Chris Sanders' new book "Helensburgh and Rhu Through Time". This is a handsomely produced volume of "then and now" photographs and is for sale at £14.99. Chris is generously giving all profits to the Heritage Trust.
