Heritage-Lottery-fund-logoA £2.3m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to refurbish and redevelop Hermitage Park in Helensburgh has now been confirmed.

The grant will pay for about 75% of the project cost, with Argyll and Bute Council contributing £280,000 and the rest coming from other funders including the War Memorial Trust. Work is expected to start in the autumn and to be complete by the summer of 2018.

Chris Packard, chairman of the Friends of Hermitage Park, said that his group had worked closely with Argyll and Bute Council since being set up five years ago.

He said: “This award from the Heritage Lottery Fund has been largely thanks to the strength of this partnership and the support of many people, in particular the dedication of Arlene Cullum and Melissa Simpson from the council, the trustees of the friends and the front-line support of our local councillors.”

The master plan includes: improvement to the memorial gardens, the bedding area next to Hermit’s Well to be redesigned as footprint of the former Hermitage House, the play park to become kitchen garden, redesign of sports area to adventure play, crazy golf and fountain plaza, a new pavilion with covered deck area to incorporate café, toilets and community space, removal of the existing pagoda shelter, more seating in sheltered areas, and additional car and cycle parking.
