Fiona-Baker-26.09.12-wA HISTORY Hut has been opened on the Waitrose store site at Colgrain.

Helensburgh archaeologist Fiona Baker (right) has created a temporary display of bottles and pots discovered during excavation work at the start of the development.

Barr Construction, Waitrose and Drum Property Group have assisted in and supported the history project, and the Hut was suggested by Barr Construction.

Part of the site was a refuse dump from 1894 to 1929, and over the years amateur bottle collectors found many stoneware pots, glass bottles and clay pipes bearing the names of local lemonade producers, chemists and other retailers.

Fiona said: “As a professional archaeologist and someone who grew up in Helensburgh I wanted to ensure that bottles and pots reflecting local retailers were collected for the benefit of the town.

“Hopefully the Hut will provide a great educational resource, and both schools and interested local people will take advantage of this initiative.”

It is open to the public from 11am-3.30pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
