THE year 2013 is a big one for Helensburgh Rugby Club . . . its 50th anniversary.

Preparations began months ago for the event, which will take place over the weekend of August 23-25 and will include a reunion dinner.

The club website has a special section for members and former members to register their interest in the weekend, and it includes several splendid pictures from the past.

Already many former players all over the world have signaled that they plan to make a pilgrimage back to Ardencaple for the occasion, and efforts are being made to get in touch with as many as possible.

Former Advertiser sports editor Calum McNicol, now a UK Regional Media PRO based at the Clyde Naval Base at Faslane, has an important part to play in the celebrations, as he is working on a history of the club.

He said: “Accessing information is easy enough, as the Advertiser has reported on the team since its first match, but unfortunately there is a real shortage of pictures.

“I have managed to find a number from the 60s, and I have plenty from the 80s to the present day. But there are hardly any of the 70s, so I would be really grateful if I could copy any from that time.”
