I AM John Thomas Cameron, nephew of my uncle, Private John Thomas Cameron. I am 84 years old now and have been researching the family tree at my son Iain's behest.

I have just returned from handing a copy of your story to my 84 and half year old father, John Thomas Cameron, nephew of the Private, and it certainly brought happiness and joy to him to again see a photo of his uncle, a photo he last remembered seeing many many  years ago on the mantle piece in his grandparents home.

I recently came across the Helensburgh Heritage Trust website and I enjoyed browsing through the many photos, especially those of Hermitage School.

I lived in Helensburgh from the age of three and I attended Hermitage primary and then senior school from 1949 till 1958.

I STUMBLED upon the Heritage Trust website while browsing through Helensburgh history.

I am writing to you from Australia and am researching my family tree with difficulty.

I know that my great grandfather James Aitken and his wife Emily lived at Burtonhill (or Burton Hill, I'm not sure which) in Helensburgh and I would be very interested to know whether the house still stands or anything about either it or the family.

DOES anyone remember a whale beaching at Cardross around the time of the Clydebank Blitz?

I was reading the archive section of a national newspaper where it was reported that 100 years ago a small whale had beached at Dunoon.

JUNE 8 1946, may be a date that does not ring bells for many readers, but it was the day the end of World War Two was celebrated by military parades in many cities and towns.

One was Glasgow and another was Helensburgh, where I was very proud to be marching in the Royal Navy squad which had come over the water from the Combined Operations base at Roseneath.
